At E3 this year Ubisoft announced their upcoming multiplayer free-to-play hack n slash title, The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot. It is now in closed beta stage and we were fortunate enough here at Non-Fiction Gaming to have a whirl.
Whilst still in beta phase, signs are definitely promising. This game oozes hilarity through all of its promotional trailers which carries over to the game in most part.

You choose between one of three characters: the Knight, Archer or Mage. Character selection is limited at this stage and one can only hope more options will become available upon launch or shortly there after. It is also evident that the Knight will ensure you progress faster being the stockier of options. The Archer and Mage are a little squishy to play and require a little more tact when maneuvering.
You are given your own castle that acts as your main base. It is in this castle that your loot is stored and other players can come and attack you. It is imperative to lay out traps and creatures to stop them in their path. Conversely you level up your various characters by looting other players’ castles as well as castles laid out by the AI.
Around level 8 it starts to feel a little bit grindy but it helps if you are feeling stuck to fork out the 100 gold which refreshes all the possible castles you can loot.
It is a fabulously addictive concept that I found I would play for around an hour a day yet always felt the need to log and check who had looted my castle. The game allows you to watch replays of other players’ attempts, through this I found ways to improve my defenses if they succeeded and laugh maniacally when the attackers failed. Through the battlelog I was only a few clicks away from attacking them in return and having my revenge!
In your castle itself you build structures such as a summoning portal, blacksmith, gold and lifeforce mines in order to build and upgrade various components within the castle. These all take time and this is where the free to play model comes into play. Using the “Bling” buyable currency you can speed up production. This is where Ubisoft hopes you’ll get impatient and spend your real world money.
Being a free to play game the importance of balance between those who choose to pay and those that don’t will certainly become more evident as the game goes live. At this stage you can purchase one of three packs that range from $9.99 to $99.99 all with various in game bonuses such as currency, equipment and early access via the beta.
This game is definitely more fun if you have friends playing as well. Trying to get through their defences, setting challenges for each other and just winning general bragging rights is all part of the fun. Not to mention the ability to watch replays of everyone who has tried successfully or failed miserably to run through your castle is fantastic.
As the game is still in Beta I don’t feel comfortable giving it a specific score just yet. There are still bugs to iron out, sound settings to insert but for the most part The Mighty Quest For Epic Loot is really coming together for Ubisoft and it is one to keep an eye on.
The Mighty Quest For Epic Loot and other Ubisoft games were available to play at PAX Aus and are available through UPlay.
