HomeUpdates R18+ Video Game Classification in Australia at Last

[News] R18+ Video Game Classification in Australia at Last

Finally, the R18+ legislation passed Australian federal parliament Monday evening. Gamers nation-wide celebrate the 10 year struggle that has seen Australia see many a game banned and altered due to the lack of an R18+ classification.

Effective as of 1st January 2013 Australia will now be on an equal playing field with the rest of the world as we add an adult rating to the video game industry. Previously, Australia has only had up to a MA15+ classification which has outraged the majority of the general public.

Jason Clare, Minister for Home Affairs and Justice

Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Justice, Jason Clare says, “The R 18+ category will inform consumers, parents and retailers about which games are not suitable for minors to play, and will prevent minors from purchasing unsuitable material.”

“The reforms also mean that adults are able to choose what games they play within the bounds of the law.”

State and territories now need to create their own complimentary legislation to ensure the legislation is carried out accordingly.

Although passed at a federal level, here’s hoping for a harmonious and smooth transition amongst the state and territories so the everyday consumer can finally benefit from the ruling.
