Hades 2 review – A New Myth in the Making

A New Myth in the Making

Hades 2, the highly anticipated sequel from Supergiant Games, builds upon the award-winning formula of the original while adding deeper mechanics, expanded storytelling, and new characters. This time, players control Melinoë, the Princess of the Underworld, who must face off against the Titan Chronos using a refined arsenal of weapons, magic, and divine boons.

Gameplay: Familiar but Evolved Combat

At its core, Hades 2 retains the roguelike action fans loved in the original—fast-paced combat, meaningful upgrades, and procedural challenges. However, it deepens the experience with expanded skill trees and a new Magick system, which introduces customizable abilities for each run. The combat flows smoother than ever, letting you experiment with a variety of playstyles, from lightning-fast attacks to tanky, elemental builds.

Melinoë’s unique abilities, such as infused boons tied to elemental essences, offer a fresh layer of strategy that encourages thoughtful decision-making during each encounter. Combat feels precise and dynamic, ensuring that no two runs play the same.

Story and Characters: A Deeper Dive into the Mythos

Supergiant Games continues its tradition of delivering rich storytelling within a roguelike framework. Melinoë’s quest is both personal and epic, giving players insight into her mysterious origins while interacting with familiar gods and new faces like Moros, the God of Doom. The character relationships feel organic—gods chat with each other independently, making the world more immersive.

The narrative unfolds in smaller, meaningful encounters rather than grand cutscenes, offering players the freedom to engage with the story at their own pace. Choices made during these interactions subtly affect how characters respond over time, adding weight to your actions.

Visuals and Atmosphere: A Vibrant Mythological World

Hades 2’s art direction continues to impress with hand-drawn animations and stunning environments that span beyond the Underworld. From haunted warships to the eerie landscapes of Asphodel, every location feels alive and distinct. The game masterfully weaves a sense of nostalgia while introducing new elements to expand its mythological setting.

Verdict: A Sequel Worthy of Olympus

Hades 2 takes everything that made the original game a masterpiece and expands it without losing its heart. With more strategic depth, refined combat, and captivating storytelling, it offers a fresh experience for fans while remaining accessible to newcomers. Though still in early access, it’s already shaping up to be a monumental sequel.

A worthy successor that’s destined to become another classic.
