What We’ve Been Playing: August 2015

Searching for new games to tide you over until some of the newer titles come out? Take a look at what games have consumed our lives in the last month.

Call of Duty: Back Ops 3 Beta

James Wilson

I’ve been spending the past week grinding up the levels and testing out Treyarch’s latest title due for release in November; Black Ops 3.
This game is seriously fun and I had the MW2 feeling when playing, which is that I just couldn’t put it down, it’s the “one more game” at 2am feeling that every gamer has had to deal with.

What’s New?

Specialists are a big change coming to the futuristic shooter, allowing players to choose which character they want along with their special abilities. Some examples are: Outrider – a support squad member who uses a vision pulse to target enemies and a compact bow to take them out, Ruin – a tank-like character who deploys ground spikes similar to Destiny’s Titan to kill opponents in a short radius, and a burst of speed to traverse the environment quickly, and my personal favourite so far Prophet – a cybernetic soldier who uses a glitch to confuse targets and a tempest rail gun to shock groups.
New as well is wall-running, a useful ability especially when chained to access hard to reach areas, as well as the cool ‘paint shop’ feature allowing players to customise the camos on their guns.
Treyarch have succeeded in bringing the fun elements of Black Ops 2′s multiplayer over to Black Ops 3, with a few tweaks, and even though some things can be over-powered (player abilities/some score-streaks) it still feels satisfying to play. Here’s hoping the campaign and Zombies follow suit.

Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Perfect Dark (Rare Replay)

Aidan B.

What’s better than a cheap game? Many cheap games, of course! Rare Replay is a collection of the mainstay titles from the legendary developer, Rare. Although there are notable exceptions, for obvious reasons (Goldeneye 64, Diddy Kong Racing), there is a treasure trove of games to entertain you. Perfect Dark and Conker’s Bad Fur Day are my games of choice.

I never got a chance to play Conker’s when it was released back in 2001 so it’s an enjoyable experience for me catching up on what I missed. Perfect Dark is something I’ve played to exhaustion. Getting the updated graphics from the Xbox 360 conversion and the smoother gameplay is a joy.

Who doesn’t love a bit of nostalgia?
