8 Games That Need A Sequel

Looking back on our gaming past, it’s hard not to put on the Rose coloured glasses. Maybe we were bright eyed youths on the cusp of a gaming revolution that we have fond memories. Through our Facebook and Twitter we asked fans, “Which Games Need A Sequel?” and were met with a great response.

Of course we couldn’t fit everything in here, there are too many games that influenced a generation of gamers. We still want to know from you what deserves to be up there.

So in no particular order, we have Games That Need A Sequel:

1. Time Splitters (2000)

games that need a sequel timesplitters

Heralded as the best split-screen multiplayer-focused first person shooters of their generation! The Time Splitters games brought great heat into the homes of Playstation 2 owners.

Split screen or online multiplayer with a focus on classic and innovative arcade modes. Don’t have any friends? We’ve got some decent enough bots to war against if you’re not into the single or co-op story mode. A MapMaker was also included to allow players to design their own levels, similar to Trails Evolution and Portal 2.

How likely is a TimeSplitters sequel?

Slim, but looking a little brighter.

There was a Time Splitters 4 on and off development for a few years now. After Free Radical was bought out by Crytek there was talk of using the CryEngine 3.

Since 2012 Crytek have given permission to a group of fans wanting to develop a Time Splitters mod using the CryEngine 3. The fan project is more a HD remake of the three previous Time Splitters games but perhaps if Time Splitters Rewind is popular we could see that number 4 in the future.

2. Vampire The Masquerade – Bloodlines (2004)

games that need a sequel Vampires Bloodlines

A great RPG that let you live out some of those weird Vampire fantasies you’ve been keeping secret since Twilight ruined vampires. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines had a great atmosphere and writing. From arguing with stop signs to being scared out of your mind in a haunted hotel, Bloodlines had great depth and replay ability. The game was fantastic and brought a fun factor to what was a Dark RPG based on the White Wolf’s world.

If you feel like giving it a go, just make sure you patch the hell out of it should you get yourself a copy.

Never.

Shortly after the release of Bloodlines, Troika Studios closed its doors. Despite the popularity of Vampires the past couple of years, it’s not enough to raise the series from the dead. The game has become popular again since its release on Steam, but still, it’s just wishful thinking.

3. Commander Keen (1990)

games that need a sequel

Before id Software was synonymous with first-person shooters, they redefined the platformer genre on PC, which for years was struggling to keep up with consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Commander Keen changed all that, fighting cartoony aliens and vegetable people with a pogo stick.

If you were a PC kid growing up in the 1990s, chances are you played this game and use it as a benchmark to compare gaming childhoods with your friends.

id Software have moved on to darker more explodier things and Commander Keen isn’t on their radar. Unless Billy Blazkowicz can somehow team up with his grandfather William Blazkowicz from Wolfenstein 3D we might not see him again.

Tom Hall, Commander Keen’s creative designer claims that he intends to make a new game if he ever reclaims the intellectual property rights but you may have to settle for a spiritual sequel.

4. Castle Crashers (2008)

One of the most revered and critically successful indie games of all-time is Castle Crashers. Whether it’s a result of the title’s four-player co-op, wacky humour, or depth of unlockables, there’s something truly special about The Behemoth’s multi-player beat-em-up. While Battleblock Theatre proved to be a fun distraction, there’s something all too alluring about the possibility of Castle Crashers 2.

Chances of a Castle Crasher Sequel:

Decent, but not for a long while.

The game’s not completely off the table yet, as The Behemoth has stated, “we have yet to make a sequel in our 9 years of making games. I think we want to explore some more universes before revisiting any previously created ones.” regarding a sequel to CC.

So it may be a long time before The Behemoth gives us another excuse to yell at our friends while wearing multi-coloured knight outfits.

5. Shenmue (1999)

Shenmue

Still remembered as one of the “greatest games of all time” Shenmue was the beginning of what was to be a tale split up over 11 Chapters. The Shenmue series was an epic adventure with movie-like cinematography and plot elements that blended: drama, mystery, romance, suspense and action.

After dwindling sales for the Dreamcast and poor sales of Shenmue II across Xbox and Dreamcast, the series was put on hold.

Chances of a Shenmue Sequel:

shenmue2-1

Slim to none.

Shenmue III is in a long term pending state. It’s unlikely Sega has the chops to risk another game to continue the Shenmue saga starting at Chapter 7. Apparently the story is finished and planned out however after making a huge loss on the previous titles. Fans will just have to put up with seeing Ryo Hazuki turn up in Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing.

6. Pokemon Snap (1999)

Pokemon Snap Sequel

In what many still consider the best Pokemon spin-off to-date, Pokemon Snap took fans out of the role of a trainer and made them photographers. While the premise itself sounds incredibly lame, the execution of this on-rails shooter was one of the easiest games in the series to just pick up and play, making for plenty of incentive to try to best previous Pocket Monster photos.

Snapping pictures of recognizable and iconic monsters in their natural habitat gave gamers a better look at what wild Pokemon did other than hangout in waste-high grass awaiting capture.

Chances are pretty good, we know it’s on their radar. With the gyroscopic capabilities of both the Wii U GamePad and the 3DS, there’s little doubt that a sequel would work.

However Pokemon X and Y director Junichi Masuda thinks it would need some unique ideas to really stand out. “Personally, I really love the Pokemon Snap game, but it wouldn’t be interesting if we just released the same game, how it was before, for the Wii U or 3DS,” In an Interview with Polygon  Masuda continues, “So we have to come up with a new idea or something that will make it more appealing to players. Sometime down the road, we may have something.”

7. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (1996)

Leave it to Nintendo to take an existing genre and turn it into something unique and beautiful. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is a standout title that brought the world of Mario to life in a way that was never done before. The unique gameplay helped introduce a generation of young gamers to JRPGs, while also making something fresh and exciting.

Much like old Squaresoft games, Super Mario RPG still sees a lot of play today from Speed Runners and old fans. The game has spawned similar games such as Paper Mario other RPG-style spiritual sequels like Mario and Luigi Partners in Time. However, while Paper Mario is beloved in its own right, a direct sequel to the SNES smash hit would be a dream come true for countless fans.

Outlook not good.

Paper Mario was actually supposed to be Super Mario RPG 2. The rumour is that because of Square’s involvement with the original, Nintendo is unable to come back to this well without Square Enix who owns the copyright to Geno.

8. Conker’s Bad Fur Day (2001)

conkers-bad-fur-day

People have been wanting one for years, fans tweeted and Facebooked Conker at us as soon as we mentioned sequels. Rare even teased us with a port to the Xbox, but the twisted and satirical adventures of Conker is thus far relegated to just one little title. Brilliant, and low-brow though it may be, it was a solid and comical platformer that is still popular to this day.

Chances of a Conker’s Bad Fur Day Sequel:

conkers

Very low, unless you want Conker’s Nuts and Bolts?

Conker’s Other Bad Day was supposed to see the titular hero lose all his money and go on another adventure. According to Chris Seavor the voice of Conker,

“There was also a massive space poo: The Cthulpoo, the main baddie. Lots of other stuff happened, with some new characters appeared and old favourites returned. We got to find out about Gregg’s childhood and why he hated cats, there were tons and tons of parodies of the more contemporary movies, and an evil doppleganger version of Conker that you got to play for a while.”

While this could have been amazing, I think it’s really up in the air at the moment.

Got A Game Not Listed Here?

I’m aware that there may be more than 8 Games That Require Sequels. Rare probably deserves an article unto themselves if my childhood is anything to go by.

This is where you come in, let us know what other games were great and deserve a sequel, let us know why and we’ll have to make another list.

You can comment below or send us a message through Facebook and Twitter. What game(s) did you want to see make the list?

  1. Chrono Cross definitely needs a sequel. it took 20 years to get from Chrono Trigger to Chrono Cross though so I don’t see it happening.
