Microsoft Reveals Groundbreaking VR Game ‘Starship Commander’

Microsoft just announced Starship Commander, a promising a new VR game from upstart Human Interact that looks to be one of the most immersive VR games to date.

Technology has come a long way since the Kinect days, yet Microsoft’s promises of ‘next generation natural language processing’ is certainly ambitious.

Players take the roll of a Starship Commander as they try to win over the galaxy. Wearing a VR headset, not only are players put in the captain’s seat, but they also talk to allies and enemies and what is said influences the game.

Commanders will use the Steam VR or the Oculus to look around and give commands to their ships. At this stage it appears this interactive narrative doesn’t have traditional controller gameplay.

Two videos were released revealing the Oculus/Steam VR game; the first shows off the first gameplay and the second is a behind the scenes look at the development.

Microsoft & Human Interact

Developers Human Interact are using Microsoft Cognitive Services to make the speech recognition as good as it can be. Apparently it will even pick up words they haven’t specifically put into the game, though I’m still not convinced Cortana can understand an Australian accent yet.
