Dualshock 4 Light Bar Has Its True Purpose Revealed!

Dualshock 4’s Light Bar was for Project Morpheus Peripherals all along.

True Form!

The ‘light bar’ at the back of the Dualshock 4’s controller has been giving Playstation 4 owners some trouble according to Senior Designer at Sony Entertainment Europe in a recent talk with Techradar;

“The tracking light, our department said that we needed that on…” in which he was speaking about the light bar, he continues in saying; “it was for tracking for virtual Reality” “ and when all these things were coming out six months ago and everyone was going; ‘its (light bar) reflecting in my TV’, we were going ‘Oh no!’ because we couldn’t tell anyone what it was for”.

It seemed that the light bar wasn’t just for cosmetic reasons, the light bar on the Dualshock 4 was going to be used in conjunction with the newly announced ‘Project Morpheus’ Virtual Reality Headset, unveiled at last month’s GDC, the device apparently works really smoothly and has very low latency, you can read about more information, here.

Sony making a Virtual Reality headset is great, since it’s a company that wants the best for Video gaming.

And to keep a lid on this for so long is surprising since the controller was revealed before the release of the PS4 last November. And even longer because Project Morpheus was in development and still is 3+ years ago and this current model is a prototype. The light bar before was only utilised in few games on the console, and is tracked using the PS4’s camera, for the people who’ve bought one.

In a recent PS4 console update, PS4 users are now able to dim the light bar, but can’t turn the light completely off. Hopefully we will find out more information about this in the upcoming E3.
